can you love

a broken songbird

if she never sings

can you lift her

broken form

into your gentleness

and bring her home

to Love

will you let her hobble

in the garden

to look beneath the stones

for nourishment

and gather seeds of nuture

or will you put her

in a cage again

for protection

from the neighbor’s cat

will you let her fly

to test her mended wing

and rejoice in her

bright feathers on the wind

even if they grow in funny colors

but somehow more than all of this

i need to know

can you love

a broken songbird

if she never sings
