turtle tears

turtle tears

she slipped into the grass

and rolled onto her back

the weight of shell beneath her

for this moment

the coldness of wet earth

somehow soothed and softened

as she burrowed

with an awkward grace

(limbs akimbo but relieved)

into its welcome

her belly now exposed

to none

save herself and sky

she watched the clouds of day

rolling over as had she

a moon reflecting

to commune

glist’ning briefly in the light

her underside revealed

and then awash

in turtle tears

traipsing down the time-worn trails

of ancient skin

to fall

to meld

as she to earth

already heavy

with the evening dew
