unnecessary burdens

your shame
you bear so heavily
that any opportunity to discard
you take
dumping your fears
onto me
which i catch, of course
so readily

i am an easy target
so it seems
with my unworthy-sized holes
just the right shape
to take in
the lumbering missiles of your disowned

how is it that they slip across the boundary
between you and me
undetected, unaware
until (as if at once) the weight appears
unbearable in me

perhaps you are me
and i am you
both of us needing
Love
to dispel the unlovable fears
and fill the incompetent holes
leaving us no space to carry
that which is not ours to bear

let us receive
ourselves
